What is addiction?

Addiction, also known as substance abuse, is an unhealthy overuse or dependence on an addictive substance like alcohol or drugs. It also means dependence on other habits like phone/digital devices, gambling, porn, TV, food and even shopping!

Addiction is different from just taking pleasure in that activity in 2 Ways:

  1. An addict will pursue the activity ignoring their responsibility to their relationships, academics and professional goals.
  2. They will not allow anything, to stop them from these activities.

Why does addiction occur?

Addiction/Substance Abuse, can be a result of peer pressure, the desire to get numb enough to not feel pain/grief or to experience a heightened sense of happiness (Dopamine rush). Other kinds of addictions may start off as simple pleasurable activities and then become a habit.

Substance abuse

Which are the most common substances that are abused?

Addiction or abuse can be related to almost any drug. It includes:

  • Alcohol (alcoholism)
  • Cigarettes
  • Cannabis – marijuana or hashish
  • Hallucinogens – LSD or mushrooms
  • Household inhalants – sniffing glue, paint thinner
  • Antidepressants taken in higher dose without prescription from the specialist or psychiatrist and other opiates.

Symptoms of Addiction/Substance abuse disorder

The symptoms of abuse differ depending on the substance that is abused, however common symptoms include:

  • Bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils
  • Hallucinations
  • Chills and paranoia
  • Changes in mood/behaviour
  • Changes in sleeping and eating habits
  • Recklessness and increased desire for dangerous activities
  • Dehydration and other imbalances in the body

Can substance abuse be fatal?

Yes in some cases, the reckless overuse of drug or alcohol can result to alcohol poisoning, or high concentrations of drugs in the blood that alter the nervous and endocrine systems, leading to death.
